American brothers and No. 2 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan defeated top seeds Max Mirnyi and Jonas Bjorkman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, at the US Open Men's Doubles championship on Friday.
Winning the US Open "feels unbelievable. You know, we didn't want to go down as one of the only teams to lose all the Slams," said Mike Bryan, referring to the twins inability to capture a men's doubles title despite five straight finals appearances since their French Open men's doubles title in 2003. "It's more kind of a relief. But, you know, to do it here at the US Open, I mean, it's worth giving up five in a row."
Bobbing, bouncing and bumping chests, the exuberant Bryan brothers quickly captured the first set in just 21 minutes by winning five straight games, the last three of which Mirnyi and Bjorkman failed to score a single point. The victory was completed in a surprisingly quick 57 minutes as the Bryans maintained an aggressive net game coupled with Bob Bryan's strong serve, which notched five of the twins' seven aces.
This was the fifth time the two teams have squared off, with Bjorkman-Mirnyi taking their only victory against the twins in the first round of Roland Garros.
Miryni and Bjorkman stayed competitive in the second set until the Bryan brothers broke serve in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. After that game, Mirnyi and Bjorkman managed to win just one more game and looked more overwhelmed than determined to come back.
