MILWAUKEE -- It was a cool 73 degrees at game time on Thursday, but the temperature was plenty warm enough for Miguel Cabrera. That's because for the third time this year, the slugger was cracking the starting lineup at the hot corner.
Marlins manager Jack McKeon produced a new-look starting nine on Wednesday, accommodating the return of Juan Encarnacion to the lineup while keeping Cabrera's bat in the mix by stashing him at third base.
"There's no way they can put me every day over there because we have a great third baseman: Mike Lowell," Cabrera said, adding that he would prefer to return to what he called his natural position at some point in the future.
"It's for one day only," Cabrera said. "I don't know when I'm going to go back to third base and play every day like I want to. I want to play there but can't right now. I just want to hit. I'm happy in left field, I feel great over there."
Jeff Conine, who played right field Wednesday and made a crucial error on a play that brought two runs across in a 6-4 loss to the Brewers, switched to left field and batted in the two-slot for the fourth time in 2005. He opened Thursday's game with a diving catch to rob Rickie Weeks of a leadoff single in the first.
"We want someone who can put the ball in play out there," McKeon said of batting Conine second.
Encarnacion, who had missed the last four games with a nagging wrist injury, started Thursday in right.
"We can use his bat in there, no question," McKeon said. "He's one of the three guys who gives us any power. We've got full power in there today. I think we're last in the league in power."
After further inspecting his stats packet, McKeon pointed out that the team is third from the bottom with 100 home runs, trailed only by Washington and San Francisco (95 each). Encarnacion, Cabrera and Carlos Delgado account for 67 of those long balls.
Encarnacion's single in the second inning Thursday was the 1,001st hit of his career. He has also now hit safely in 16 of his last 22 contests with 10 RBIs, though he hasn't homered since July 27 against Pittsburgh.
